New to back country skiing? Not exactly sure what 'climbing skins' are for? Let us help you out.

I am not sure how all this works?

Climbing skins use a durable waterproof glue to temporarily adhere a textile 'skin' to your touring ski or split board bases. The climbing skin fabric is oriented to allow you skis to slide forward, but not backward, which allows you to climb up snow slopes. You climb a slope with your hinged at the toe touring gear and skins, remove the skins at the top, and ski or ride down. Repeat as much as you legs will let you!

Sounds simple, what else do I need?

You will also need skis or a 'split' snowboard that allows you to lift your heel and walk normally (as opposed to your heel being locked down): Telemark skis, Alpine skis with touring bindings, or a Splitboard with splitboard binding will all do the trick. In addition you will need an avalanche beacon, probes, shovel, and back pack (airbag recommended) if you enter avalanche terrain. This may sound expensive but when you compare it to all the gear you need,  and lift tickets at a ski resort, it's actually quite reasonable.

What do I need to know about backcountry skiing?

Backcountry skiing gives you access to the best snow, few people, terrific exercise, and a great nature experience. There are however some things you need to know before going into the backcountry. You will need to plan routes to avoid avalanche hazard and that match your ability. This may sound complicated but don't be dissuaded, hundreds of thousands of people ski tour every year without incident once they learn to observe a few important protocols, travel with experienced friends or guides, or get some training. See our 'tips' page for a number of links to get you started on backcountry education. Just remember, the loftier your goals, and the more difficult runs, the more you will need advanced backcountry education and experience.

Are skins hard to put on?

Nothing could be simpler. Experienced tourers can go from downhill mode to uphill mode in minutes.

To apply your skins start by hooking skins over tip.
hook skins over tip
Center your climbing skins and hook over the ski tail.
CENTER AND HOOK OVER TAIL
Firmly press your climbing skins onto the ski.
PRESS SKIN TO SKI
Put on your skis and climb. Reverse the process at the top.
